McGaugh earned a B.S., A.M., and did graduate work in Kansas. He earned a Ph. D. in Geography from the University of Chicago in 1948. He taught Geography 415 at Central Michigan University, 1949-1975, and served as chair of the Geography Dept., 1961-1970. He was granted emeritus status in the early 1980s and returned to Kansas.
